Children of Alcoholics Program

Renz Center offers a safe and supportive atmosphere for children who are affected by a caregiver's abuse of alcohol or drugs. Treatment services include individual and group sessions for children and adolescents 3–17 years of age. Offsite services are available at various schools and facilities in the Fox Valley.

A COA is any child or adult child of an alcoholic or addicted parent or caregiver.

A parent may be actively using drugs/alcohol or may be in a treatment or a recovery program. The substance abuser may or may not be in the home as is the case in separated, divorced, foster, or adoptive families. It is important to note that children continue to be affected regardless of the substance abuser's current involvement in the family.

COA Program:

This program will include an initial assessment, closed group sessions of 6-8 weeks and individual and/or family sessions as needed.

The topics that will be addressed include:

  • identifying and expressing feelings
  • age appropriate information on alcohol and other drugs
  • family rules and roles
  • self esteem and self awareness
  • making positive choices
  • developing coping skills to deal with stress, change and challenges
  • assertiveness and communication skills
