FREE HIV TESTING
Early detection of HIV can prolong the duration and quality of life. The counseling and testing program offers free HIV testing using the Ora-Quick testing device which is a mouth swab that tests for antibodies specific to HIV. Results are available within 20 minutes
of taking
the test.
Prior to testing, a trained counselor will ask questions about
reasons for testing, assess risk, and conduct a one-on-one
counseling session which includes education, risk reduction
counseling, and an action plan. Should the client test positive,
staff will provide counseling and transition the client into case management, medical care, and other services.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Outreach programs have a tremendous potential for reducing
the spread of HIV by reaching high risk populations where
they gather. The outreach program staff go to bars, parks,
homes, etc., to provide testing and counseling services.
SCHOOL PREVENTION PROGRAM
Six session HIV education and prevention techniques for youth.
SISTA
SISTERS INFORMING SISTERS ABOUT
TOPICS ON AIDS
This is a group level intervention specific to Latina and
African American women. There are five group sessions
that focus on ethnic and gender pride, HIV knowledge,
skills training and decision making.
RESPECT
RESPECT is a two to four session intervention designed to
support risk reduction behaviors by increasing the client’s
perception of his/her personal risks and by emphasizing
incremental risk reduction strategies. The goal is to explore
risk taking behaviors and negotiate steps which support
risk reduction.
